Who would have thought that the band Tool created a song using the Fibonacci number sequence!

Esquisse three – 3D translation

Background

Designers have over the centuries been inspired by the forms of nature. As nature has evolved elegant ways to deal with structure and often appears complex and undecipherable. It is important through careful observation that we learn to understand the geometric and repetitive patterns that often exist.

Process

Find a product in nature that demonstrates geometry (flower, seed pod or leaf) and translate into a geometrical form using Solid works or Rhino. By fracturing the form you will then be able to print the flat pattern on paper and fold this into a representation of the original.

Submission

Document natural forms through photography or sketch and submit these plus three variations in paper. Please note attention to detail is critical to achieving a good result.

Four holds

•Interference/tolerance
•Tension
•Torsion
•Mechanical

•Any combination of these holds makes a ‘locking system’.
•Repetition of any of these increases the strength of the structure.

Some things to consider for ultimate strength:-

•Material properties
•Torsional strength
•Compression strength
•Tensile strength
•Stress concentration areas/shearing

Working against us:-

•Gravity - is a natural phenomenon that gives weight to objects.
•Force - is that which can cause an object with mass to change its velocity/position.
•Mass - the degree of accelaration a body acquires when subject to a force.
•Inertia - resistance of an object to a change in its state of motion.
